Stretch ceilings have long been used in the design of various premises - both at home and in the office. They have many advantages, are easy to install and maintain.

In order to understand how to choose the most suitable product option, it is important to understand well what materials stretch ceilings are made of, what types there are and what are the features of their installation.

Advantages and disadvantages of two-level stretch ceilings

As a finishing material, the stretch ceiling has many advantages due to which it is often used indoors:

  • The surface of the ceiling takes on a smooth, stretched appearance. This is especially true for ceilings in old houses that have many cosmetic defects - bumps, drops and mechanical damage.
  • Installation of a stretch ceiling is very fast - as a rule, all work takes no more than 1-2 days; work is clean and not very noisy.
  • In terms of design, stretch ceilings provide ample opportunities for choice - you can take the classic white options, or you can develop an individual style that will emphasize the beauty of the interior.

  • Versatility - such ceilings can be mounted in any room - bedroom, kitchen, toilet, etc.
  • Ceilings are quite durable and easy to maintain - just periodically wipe them from dirt.
  • A very important practical property of such materials is their water resistance. This is especially true for private houses and apartments on the top floors.
  • Installation of ceilings is quite affordable for people who do not have special skills - accordingly, if you wish, you can save on this.

The only significant drawback of stretch ceilings is their higher cost compared to traditional finishing methods - for example, whitewashing or PVC panels. However, the long service life largely compensates for installation costs.

Also, the weaknesses of these materials include their low resistance to heating. In this regard, special built-in diode lamps are selected for stretch ceilings, which do not glow too much.

Types of stretch ceilings

Varieties of these products are distinguished on the basis of different features: the material of the web, appearance, color, installation features.

By canvas material

Stretch ceilings are made of two types of materials - PVC films and fabrics.

PVC film

This is an artificial matter made from polyvinyl chloride. Usually it is welded from several fragments, and for this the temperature in the room is heated with a special gun to 60-70 degrees. Due to this, the film expands, becomes elastic, and after cooling it stretches again, which provides the ceiling with a perfectly even appearance.

Films can be of various colors, contain drawings, which allows them to be widely used in the interior of the room.

Films can be purchased at the store in a compact form - they are rolled into rolls.

You can also order ceilings with an individual design: a predetermined pattern is printed on special printers.

Along with the richest design possibilities, the film ceiling also has the following advantages:

  • The surface is completely devoid of flaws and folds (provided proper installation).
  • The material is less expensive compared to fabric ceilings.
  • The material does not absorb odors, dirt and is easily wiped with a normal damp cloth.
  • Even in conditions of high humidity, the formation of mold on such a ceiling is excluded.
  • PVC film creates sound insulation due to the properties of the material.
  • Finally, the film does not let moisture through at all, so such a ceiling does not leak.

Along with the advantages of PVC ceilings, there are also negative features:

  • The film is quite vulnerable to mechanical damage - it is important to take this into account during installation and cleaning (carefully wipe the surface and do not hit it, do not touch it with sharp objects).
  • Since such ceilings are assembled from several fragments, the seam can remain quite noticeable.
  • The installation process is accompanied by strong artificial odors and heating the air to high temperatures, so it is better to remove all objects from the room.

The film itself has the following technical characteristics:

  • The standard thickness is 1.3 mm. Deviations are allowed in both directions within 0.2 mm.
  • The width varies in a wide range - from 1.3 to 2.7 m.
  • The texture is glossy, satin or matte (more details in the relevant section).
  • Fire resistance - melts when burned.
  • Resistant to negative temperatures up to +5°C.

NOTE. If the temperature in the room can drop below room temperature, then it is better not to install the PVC film - it has a risk of cracking.

fabric ceilings

Fabric stretch ceilings are made from natural materials. In texture, it somewhat resembles the materials from which stockings are made.

The fabric has its advantages:

  • Sufficient width for standard room sizes (3 meters wide and up to 5 meters long). This allows you to stretch a single monolithic piece without seams, which gives a more attractive appearance to the finished ceiling.
  • The fabric "breathes", passes both water and air, without creating a greenhouse effect. This is true for private one-story houses. In order not to let water through, it is treated with polyurethane, creating a moisture-proof layer.
  • The fabric is more resistant to frost and temperature changes than PVC.
  • Since the installation is carried out without the use of a heat gun and other special equipment, it is quite possible to do it yourself, without calling a team.
  • Fabric ceilings are quite durable and serve flawlessly for many years.

The material has some weaknesses:

  • The fabric is not as elastic as PVC film, so it is more difficult to keep it evenly stretched.
  • Such material is always more expensive than film counterparts.
  • It is also less convenient for maintenance, since fabric contamination is more difficult to remove than conventional PVC film.
  • In terms of design possibilities, fabrics are inferior to PVC - the choice of colors and patterns is clearly not so large.
  • Finally, designs with fabric webs do not involve the use of a harpoon, which is more reliable than the harpoonless mounting method (details in the corresponding section).

The technical characteristics of woven fabrics from which stretch ceilings are made include:

  • The width varies widely - from a meter to 5.
  • The thickness of the product is about 2.5 mm.
  • The texture is matte and translucent.
  • Fabric density from 150 to 300 g/m2.
  • The material is combustible, but it does not emit toxic products.
  • The service life is very long - up to 20 years (as a rule, the guarantee is about 10 years).
  • The temperature range allows the use of fabric ceilings in any conditions - from -50 to + 70 ° C.

To choose the best option, you need to proceed from the operating conditions and the real possibilities of the budget.

Video - installation features of fabric stretch ceilings

By surface texture

In appearance, there are three types of stretch ceilings:

  • matte;
  • glossy;
  • satin.

All of them do not differ from each other in technical parameters. The only difference is in the visual features of the surface. Matte ceilings have a muted background that reflects a small amount of light. Outwardly, it is easy to confuse it with an ordinary whitewashed ceiling (unless, of course, the color of the canvas is white).

They are installed in classic interiors to focus not on the ceiling, but on the innermost space of the room.

They are also indispensable if there is a desire to put a classic white ceiling in the house.

Of course, the matte surface implies not only white, but also other color options, as well as artistic ceilings.

Unlike matte, glossy stretch ceilings have a corresponding light effect. They reflect the rays so that they are essentially one large mirror. This is an interesting option for a stylish, modern design.

Gloss visually enlarges the space by reflecting the entire room. Dark tones work especially well in this sense.

This is especially true for small rooms - for example, for attics.

Video - caring for a glossy stretch ceiling is very simple

Finally, satin ceilings are the golden mean between matte and glossy. They do not shine like gloss, but thanks to the special processing of the material, they acquire a perfectly smooth surface that unobtrusively reflects the interior.

Such a material is called satin due to its visual similarity to the corresponding type of fabric. Satin fabric is silky, smooth to the touch and is the most expensive type of fabric due to the particularly dense weaving technology of the thread. Satin ceilings are also similar to silk and therefore fit perfectly into a variety of home interiors.

According to the structure of the finished product

Ceilings often consist of one level. But there are more complex options - two-level stretch ceilings, less often - multi-level. All this gives the ceiling originality of the interior and creates a large choice in favor of a particular model.

How to choose the right stretch ceiling

Choosing the right option for a stretch ceiling means correctly correlating the design features of the room, operating conditions with the parameters of the material. As for the interior, here the choice is determined by individual preferences.

And for the rest of the parameters, you can consider a few interesting tips:

  • If the room has a constantly high level of air humidity (bath, shower, kitchen), it is accordingly better to choose PVC film ceilings - it is much easier to care for them, and the material does not get wet.
  • If the ceilings are mounted in a room where annual temperature changes are likely (for example, in a country house, in a country house with non-permanent residence). it is better to use more reliable fabric canvases - they will easily withstand any winter cold.
  • If special requirements are placed on the design of the room, then you must obviously choose among film products - among them, even the most sophisticated buyers will surely find a lot of interesting ideas.
  • If you are closer to classic, warm colors in the interior of the house, then it is better to choose fabric matter - it creates the effect of warmth and comfort, unlike smoother film counterparts.
  • If the room is small, cramped, then the choice should lean towards a glossy surface, which significantly increases the space visually.
  • If the installation of the ceiling will be in a room from which there is no way to remove things, then it is worth considering fabric options, since, as already mentioned, heat guns are used when installing film products - the temperature can harm the furniture.
  • If the ceiling is mounted in a country house or in a one-story country house, then the choice should lean towards the fabric version - it breathes, and the film ones “lock” air and moisture inside.
  • When choosing specific material models, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the material, which is indicated by the warranty period. As a rule, foreign manufacturers give a guarantee for a period of 10-12 years, domestic - 1.5-2 times less.

PAY ATTENTION Do not choose a ceiling solely on the basis of price. Stretch ceilings are quite durable products, so even at a high price, the costs will pay off in a few years. And if you save on quality, the risk that all the work will have to be redone increases, which will lead to additional expenses.

How stretch ceilings are installed

Methods of installation of two-level and single-level stretch ceilings differ in the features of fastening the canvas on a special profile, which is fixed along the perimeter of the ceiling.

Harpoon technology

This is a very convenient installation method - the canvas is stretched on special harpoons, while visually the ceiling consists only of fabric, since there is no need to use special skirting boards.

The harpoon is a special profile made of PVC. He accompanies the canvas around its entire perimeter. The mounting scheme is shown in the figure.

The harpoon is welded to the web directly during production, so the consumer is supplied with a ready-made design. It remains only to fix the harpoon in the profile. The design is very reliable and allows you to stretch the fabric well over the surface of the ceiling. Thus, the finished design consists of two elements:

  • Harpoon with ceiling material.
  • A metal profile (usually aluminum), fixed on the top of the wall or on the ceiling itself.

The advantages of this technology are obvious:

  • The system is very simple and the work is carried out quickly.
  • Fastening is reliable and durable.
  • The surface of the ceiling is perfectly flat thanks to accurate calculations.
  • Since the harpoon is hidden behind the canvas, the surface looks quite aesthetically pleasing.
  • Thanks to this fastening, you can always dismantle the ceiling in order to return it to its place later. This is done in cases where, for example, water has flowed onto it from the roof.

NOTE. The harpoon can be placed not only around the perimeter of the room, but also in other parts, so there is the option of creating a stretch ceiling of two or more levels. This creates a rich choice for design ideas.

The installation steps are as follows:

  • Taking measurements from the premises. Measurements are made extremely accurately to prevent even the slightest error. They are performed using special laser levels.
  • Cutting material and mounting it on a harpoon
  • Installation of an aluminum profile on predetermined places.
  • Installing a harpoon in these profiles.
  • Alignment of the canvas to the ideal state with the help of heat (heat gun).

The finished system schematically looks like this.

Bead technology

Bead, or wedge, technology, unlike harpoon technology, saves room space. In this case, the gap between the ceiling and the canvas is usually within 2 cm. Using this method, seamless ceilings are mounted, which are stretched with a single canvas over the entire surface. To fix it, a small allowance (glazing bead) remains on the material itself, which is simply tucked into the profile.

The sequence of actions is approximately the following:

  • A pre-measured canvas is bent around the entire perimeter to a certain width, which will allow it to be filled into profiles.
  • An aluminum profile is mounted along the perimeter, as is the case with harpoon technology.
  • Beads are fixed in profile.
  • The canvas is leveled to a perfectly smooth state.

In this case, the stretching of the ceiling occurs in stages according to the scheme.

How often do we dream of having 2-level stretch ceilings, photos of which are found in magazines and the Internet, but things don’t go beyond dreams, because knowledge in this matter is limited. Thanks to our article, you will receive all the necessary information and you can even make the ceilings of your dreams with your own hands.

Advantages of 2-level stretch ceilings

Let's start with the fact that 2-level stretch ceilings are a complex ceiling structure, in which there is not only a stretch fabric with a baguette, but also a spatial frame with plasterboard sheathing. The difference in the levels of the stretch ceiling can be any, the shape and dimensions of the drywall box as well. As a stretch ceiling, both fabric satin or matte canvases, as well as PVC film canvases, can be used. The proposed photos show that the design of 2-level stretch ceilings can be the most diverse, it all depends on the style of the room and your wishes.

In the photo there are 2-level stretch ceilings in the bathroom and in the kitchen

2-level stretch ceilings have a lot of advantages that favorably distinguish them from other ceiling structures. The advantages of such systems include the following:

  1. High aesthetic qualities. Perhaps the most beautiful stretch ceiling is a two-level design using stretch fabrics.
  2. Unlimited design possibilities. If you look at the photo, you can see that the configuration, color, texture, style of such ceilings can be very different. Almost unlimited combinations of colors and textures of surfaces create a favorable field for the work of designers.
  3. Thanks to two-level stretch ceilings, it is easy to perform functional zoning of the room.
  4. Such 2-level stretch ceilings can be used in any room (kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, offices). They are appropriate in offices, housing, public institutions. The only exceptions are rooms with height restrictions. As you can see in the photo, different types of ceilings fit a certain style of the room.
  5. Using 2-level stretch ceilings, you can hide any communications, even the most cumbersome ones, because the dimensions and shape of the plasterboard box can be adjusted to the required dimensions of communications.
  6. Any stretch ceiling systems guarantee you protection from flooding by neighbors from above, and 2-level stretch ceilings are no exception. True, flood protection will not be 100%, because a drywall box will not hold back water, but a stretch fabric made of pvc film, not made of fabric, which occupies most of the structure, can easily hold large volumes of water.

The choice of design 2-level ceilings

How to perform 2-level stretch ceilings, we will learn further. The first and most important thing to do before starting installation is to decide on the appearance, style and design of the future ceiling. Only after that it is possible to think over its constructive solution.

As you already understood, 2-level stretch ceilings consist of two structural elements:

  • plasterboard box;
  • stretch fabric.

Although it is not uncommon for a ceiling in which both levels are made of stretch fabric.

If we talk about the design of each of them, then the box can be of any shape:

  • traditional rectangular;
  • curved;
  • round;
  • mixed.

In the photo there are 2-level stretch ceilings in the office

In this case, the box can be with a niche for backlighting or without it. We'll talk more about backlighting later. As for the finishing of plasterboard structures, it can be any, the main thing is to maintain harmony between the tension surface and the finish of the box. In addition, it is worth considering the features of the room, if wet processes take place there, then it is better to use a moisture-resistant finish. So, as a box finish, they most often use:

  • plaster with subsequent painting;
  • wallpapering;
  • sheathing with plastic panels.

Performing 2-level stretch ceilings (see photo), use the following fabric or film sheets:

  1. Monochromatic glossy panels. They are distinguished by a rich assortment of colors. The mirror surface of glossy panels visually increases the height of the room, adds space to it, especially if used. The use of two colors is carried out if they want to get a two-level ceiling with the possibility of zoning the room.
  2. Plain satin or matte canvases, such as Cerutti. Such ceilings are made using fabric panels. Their colors are not as varied and bright as those of gloss, but they are rich in textures. Leather, suede, velvet or stone ceilings - all this is the merit of fabric canvases.
  3. Ceilings with mother-of-pearl shades or the effect of a metal surface. Such unique ceilings are made using glossy panels, although if you take satin ceilings, they themselves have a slightly pearly hue that changes depending on the lighting.
  4. Ceilings "starry sky". Thanks to the use of special lighting, it is possible to obtain such wonderful 2-level stretch ceilings (see photo below). To obtain a star glow on the ceiling, different lighting devices can be used: LED strips, crystal lamps, fiber optic filaments. The glow can be one-color or multi-colored, adjustable using the control panel.
  5. 2-level stretch ceilings with photos or images printed on them. Thanks to large-format printing technologies and the use of special solvent inks, it is possible to apply any image on stretch ceilings. Special processing of images on the computer allows you to perform 3-D photo printing on the ceiling. A picture in the form of a three-dimensional image will enliven the ceiling, give the room space and depth.

As you can see, a wide range of colors, materials, textures and patterns allows you to create ceilings that are unique in their beauty. Thanks to this, you can create a 2-level stretch ceiling that suits your interior.

2-level stretch ceilings (photo): installation procedure

After looking at the photos of designer interiors and having decided on the appearance of the future ceiling, we can proceed to consider the most important question, how 2-level stretch ceilings are made. But first, let's prepare the necessary tools and materials. So, you will need the following tools:

  • building and laser level;
  • roulette;
  • pencil, square;
  • cutter;
  • drill with a perforator;
  • screwdriver;
  • spatula with rounded corners;
  • needle roller (if the curvilinear shape of the box is assumed);
  • clamps for stretch fabrics;
  • heat gun (if a PVC film sheet will be used).

To make 2-level stretch ceilings with lighting, as in the photo, you will need the following materials:

  1. drywall;
  2. CD and UD profiles;
  3. self-tapping screws for metal;
  4. dowels;
  5. putty for plasterboard (finishing and starting);
  6. primer for GKL;
  7. tension fabric (pre-ordered from a specialized company);
  8. baguette for fixing the canvas;
  9. LED Strip Light;
  10. power unit.

Ceiling installation

We begin to mount 2-level stretch ceilings. Work must be carried out in this order:

  1. First of all, you need to prepare the base ceiling. To do this, remove the crumbling plaster from it so that it does not damage the stretch fabric when it falls. Then, if there are places affected by the fungus, we treat them with antiseptic compounds. Laying electrical wiring for future fixtures. If required, we arrange special platforms for the installation of lighting fixtures.
  2. Now we carry out the fastening of the lower level, that is, the installation of the frame of the drywall box. To do this, from the lowest corner in the room, we set aside the distance by which our box will fall. Usually it is equal to 15-20 cm. Then, from the obtained point, using a laser level, we make a breakdown of the frame attachment lines on the walls.
  3. To the lines marked on the wall, we attach the guide aluminum profiles of the frame. To do this, we drill holes in the walls in increments of 20 cm, hammer dowels there. We fasten the profiles with self-tapping screws in the dowels.

  1. After that, we install vertical and transverse mounting profiles. At the same time, do not forget to make a ledge in the lower plane of the frame for arranging a niche for cornice lighting (see photo). We fasten the profiles together with metal screws.

  1. Now we sheathe our frame with drywall sheets. Sheets are cut with a cutter. If it is necessary to make a curved section of the box, we prepare a strip of drywall. To do this, we go through one side of it several times with a needle roller. Then we wet the sheet with water and wait for a while. The softened sheet bends easily in an arc and does not break. Attach it to the frame.
  2. After the drywall box for 2-level stretch ceilings is ready, we prime its surface. Then we putty and clean it.
  3. We put the LED strip in the niche of the box, connect it to the power supply.
  4. Now they are installing the second level of ceilings. First of all, we mount the baguette with the chosen method of fastening on the vertical part of the box, stepping back from the base ceiling the required distance. It is better to choose an aluminum baguette, it is stronger. For pvc canvases, a baguette with harpoon fasteners is suitable. The step of self-tapping screws for fastening a baguette is 10-15 cm.
  5. We hang the canvas on clips to the baguette at the corners of the ceiling.
  6. Warm up the heat gun. When the air in the room warms up to 40 degrees, the canvas will become elastic. Let's start installing it.
  7. We begin to fill the canvas in a baguette with a spatula. We move from the center of the wall to the corners.
  8. After tensioning the canvas, we install a fixing bar on the baguette.
  9. We carry out installation of lamps. To do this, we attach a fixing ring to the canvas at the place of the intended installation of the lighting device. We cut the film inside the ring along its contour. We attach a light source to the platforms on the ceiling and connect it.
  10. Our 2-level stretch ceilings, as in the photo, are ready!

A useful video on the installation of 2-level stretch ceilings will dispel all your last doubts:

As you can see, it is quite easy to make 2-level stretch ceilings with your own hands. As for design issues and, then numerous photos from our article will help you.

The original way of interior design in the apartment will be a two-level ceiling with the arrangement of a suspended or tension structure. This option is perfect for the living room and bedroom. Decorative design can be complemented by a unique lighting system, so that the appearance of the room will become exquisite.

Design features and advantages

By choosing a two-level design for arranging the ceiling in your room, be prepared to incur additional financial costs.

Therefore, decide in advance which installation method and ceiling design will be preferable for you:

The upper level can serve as a previously equipped ceiling plane. Drywall will be attached only to the hotel areas, which allows you to visually zone the room. You can also mount boxes around the perimeter, but the main condition will be a flat and smooth surface of the upper level.

Drywall is placed on one tier, and on the second - a tension system. This can be realized if the surface finish is excessively expensive.

The choice of installation option remains with the owner of the apartment. It is necessary to take into account the state of repair, the layout of the premises, and your own financial capabilities.

Among the advantages of two-level technologies are:

  • concealment of rough finish defects;
  • the ability to cover communications;
  • zoning of the premises;
  • visual control of the space in the room;
  • creating an original design using various lighting methods.

Ceiling construction with plasterboard box

A fairly common way to decorate the interior of rooms is the arrangement of a plasterboard ceiling.

You can solve this problem yourself, although you will have to work hard, following our instructions.

Surface preparation and marking

At the very beginning, you need to free the room from furniture and other things. The floor should be covered with foil. The surface to be treated is cleaned of the old coating.

If necessary, gaps and cracks should be repaired, primed and plastered. Finishing will be superfluous if you plan to cover the entire ceiling with drywall.

After that, you can start marking. Pre-measure the height of the corners and identify the lowest of them. To ensure a smooth horizontal structure, you should focus on this particular angle.

As a markup, you can draw a straight line on the wall used for mounting profiles. Marking with dots will help you navigate the straight suspension.

If the length of the opposite sides is different, then it is necessary to align horizontally and then make the necessary markings. It is determined by the project you have chosen.

Installation of the frame of the first tier

UD guide profiles are fastened at intervals of 600 mm around the perimeter. For the ceiling, a step of 400 mm is required.

If rounded solutions are assumed, then in such areas on the surface of the profile it is necessary to make notches with an interval of 25 mm, successively making bends taking into account the desired radius.

Suspensions of a direct type are mounted on pre-planned points on the ceiling. A step of 600 mm must be observed. After that, the ends should be bent and carefully cut.

Ceiling-type CD-profiles are mounted on these suspensions. Where a second level of construction is planned, it is advisable to install "crabs" in advance.

At this stage, you can take care of heat and sound insulation. To do this, a heater is laid in the interprofile recesses and fixed with the “tails” of the suspensions.

Then the frame of the first level is sewn up with drywall. In places where the modules are cut, it is advisable to remove a part of the material with a knife, forming a chamfer. This is necessary for greater strength of the seams.

Installation of the second tier

In the process of arranging ceilings with your own hands, you must carefully consider the installation of profiles for the second level. A contour for the UD profile is drawn on the wall.

The drawing according to the project must be applied to the surface. The presence of such markup makes it possible to visually evaluate the future design. According to the markup, a frame from the profile is attached. If necessary, the desired places are rounded off.

To lower the frame under the tier, you must:

  • cut the CD profile to the length required to lower the frame;
  • cut tongues (side parts) on one side of the cuts, which facilitates installation;
  • insert the cuts with a flat side into the UD profile fixed to the ceiling;
  • using the “flea” design, fix the cuts in increments of 500-600 mm;
  • if it is necessary to fix the curved pieces of the CD-profile, then the step should be reduced to 200-300 mm;
  • put a UD-profile on the installed cuts, followed by a strong fastening.

After the sidewall is ready, you need to cut off part of the CD profile. The length should be taken equal to the gap between the sidewall and the profile on the wall. Then they are firmly fixed on both sides. The frame will be completely ready.

Drywall fixing

To fix drywall sheets on the constructed frame, you must use the run-up. The first row starts with a full size sheet, which is mounted on profiles.

The second row also begins with a solid canvas, but from the opposite edge. The mounting technology can be seen in the photo of two-level ceilings.

To make figured parts, you must first design a template from cardboard. And then on it and cut the blanks. If the sidewalls are bent vertically, then it is necessary to mold by rolling with a spiked roller.

Then the surface is sprayed with water, and when the gypsum craton is saturated (after about an hour), an incision is made on the convex plane of the bend. The workpiece is placed on the edge, the desired bend is formed, fixed by the load and left to dry.

If you are creating illuminated ceilings, then you need to check all wiring and communications.

Drywall fastening is carried out with self-tapping screws with a pitch of 150-200 mm. To improve the quality of the future finish, the caps of the self-tapping screws must be deepened.

If at the same time the canvas is pressed through, then the mount is redone, moving away from the previous place by 40-50 mm. From the opposite edge, another sheet is fastened.

Remember, first you need to fix the upper level, then go to the side parts, and at the end - the decor of the lower part.

After that, you can start finishing. First, the surface must be primed. After drying at the joints, a sickle tape should be glued, the seams and the places where the self-tapping screws are deepened are puttied.

It is advisable to fix the outer corners with corners. It is desirable to use a metal corner for even contours, but curved surfaces must be fixed with plastic ones. Corners can also be fixed by pressing into a layer of previously applied plaster.

Sheets of fiberglass are attached to the PVA glue, and a finishing putty with a layer of 15 mm is laid on top. The surface is then sanded and primed. In conclusion, it is necessary to carry out the finishing and fix the lighting devices.

Features of the arrangement of the tension structure

Two-level stretch ceilings also look great in the living room or bedroom. In this case, the perimeter of the room will be sheathed with gypsum craton, and there will be a stretch fabric in its center.

The installation process is as follows:

  • Marking and installation of drywall boxes around the perimeter.
  • At a given height, a profile is attached, which will be the basis for fixing the canvas.
  • Heating the room and heating the canvas with a heat gun.
  • Web tension between profiles. First, diagonally opposite corners are attached. Then the other two in turn.
  • Along the perimeter, the canvas is stretched in turn along opposite edges - first one side, and then the second, lying opposite. Then the third and fourth.
  • Installation of lighting points and decorative elements.

Two-level ceiling structures are a fairly popular way to give the interior of rooms an original and attractive look.

However, the installation process is quite laborious. First you need to carefully work out the project, prepare the base, fix the frame, and only then proceed with the installation of the main sheet or drywall sheets.

All the benefits of using

If the stars are lit, then someone needs it. So tension two-level structures are successfully implemented in modern city apartments and private houses for the simple reason that they allow the owners to realize some design ideas due to their obvious advantages. What kind?

  1. modern style - for those who are used to following trends, it is the factor of the relevance of a decision that plays a key role;
  2. effective masking of pipes and communications - nothing will spoil the appearance of the room, and if necessary, you can easily get direct access to them;
  3. unlimited zoning possibilities - it can be a division within the room into several decorative and functional zones;
  4. variety of lighting scenario - additional levels of the ceiling structure can be used to place a variety of light sources on them and create unusual lighting effects;
  5. room zoom - it is noticed in the photo that stretch bunk ceilings work great for a visible increase in the height of the room - but not in the case of very modest-sized rooms;
  6. potential uniqueness of each project - there are no boundaries in terms of creating ceiling structures with several levels, which means that there is a real opportunity to uniqueize your interior, while costing a minimum of money spent;
  7. combination of different textures and shades - due to this stylistic synthesis, new forms of ceiling decoration are realized.

Summarizing all of the above, we can say with confidence that two-level ceilings can be perfectly implemented both in the format of an ordinary city apartment with a small area, and in the conditions of a spacious country house, where, as you know, square meters do not really count - and why when they are enough?

All the disadvantages of using

No matter how much we want, but everything has a downside - and often the facts found on it have much more weight and significance. But not in the case of stretch ceilings in several levels - for this it is enough to look at even a few photos from the catalogs. By and large, only the following points can be attributed to a small number of their minuses:

  1. reduction of the actual ceiling height - acquires any significance only if the room itself cannot boast of extra centimeters upwards;
  2. higher cost - an increase in the amount of consumables inevitably entails an increase in the price tag for a common project, you have to put up with this either - choose simpler and more affordable design options, there is no third option;
  3. complicated installation - a fairly logical minus, which actually only matters if you decide to install such ceilings with your own hands, however, most often this work is entrusted to professionals, therefore this drawback can be considered quite doubtful.

Installation features. Video

Above we noticed that mounting two-level stretch fabrics is a little more complicated - due to the need to design metal frame, which will serve as a supporting structure for the second level. If you disassemble the entire editing algorithm point by point, then there is nothing complicated about it:

  1. first, a general plan is drawn up - you must decide how the lower level will be designed;

    then it is necessary to perform the required measurements and prepare profiles for the construction of a metal frame;

  2. after the frame is already ready, it remains to sheathe it with drywall;
  3. at your request, you subject the drywall to finishing - in accordance with the fact that it fits into the interior as well as possible;
  4. stretch the PVC film with a heat gun according to the standard method, which has already been described more than once both on the network and on our website.

Here is a detailed video instruction that allows you to visualize it all

Color matching table

The use of several levels of the ceiling surface in a single design concept implies compliance with certain color matching rules. Of course, any rules are made to be broken - and in some cases we even recommend doing so, but there will definitely not be too much information about basic tonal combinations.

For convenience, we have arranged it in a compact table. Enjoy!

Colour Optimal combination Undesirable combination
White Blue, red, black
Beige Brown, emerald, red, black Yellow
Grey Fuchsia, red, purple Green
Pink Brown, white, olive, mint Purple, orange, lettuce
Red White, black, yellow Brown, pink
Yellow Blue, lilac, salad, light blue Black
Blue Red, white, grey, brown Green, purple
Black White, red, lettuce, yellow, orange Versatile but needs to be diluted

Interaction with light sources

With the emergence of a large number of sources additional lighting designers have a great opportunity to directly influence the atmosphere in the room, and stretch bunk ceilings here came in handy. As a rule, one of the levels is located along the perimeter or along one of the walls and takes an active part in zoning of the premises by placing spotlights or LED years. These light sources are classified as additional and help, in addition to performing a direct practical function, to achieve an artistic division of a single living space into several functional zones.

Let's see how it all happens in reality.

What light sources are actively used?

  • spots- spotlights, which are also often called mortise, have the ability to illuminate the space within a maximum radius of 2 meters and therefore are most often used in a bunch of 4-6 pieces, placed in series or in random order;
  • LED strips- LED strips that stretch along the perimeter or along one of the walls and illuminate the space coolly are the basic element of the so-called hidden lighting;
  • chandeliers- the classic version of the main lighting, most often its central element, in the case of using two-level ceilings, is placed mainly on the PVC sheet itself;
  • ceiling lamps- there are a large number of variations - and each of them can play its role in a simulated light scenario, it can be placed both on the plasterboard part and directly on the stretch fabric.

It should be noted that quite often LEDs are located at the top level in such a way as to highlight certain areas, thereby helping to achieve a three-dimensional and beautiful display of the pattern printed on the canvas. The most common options:

  • starry sky;
  • specific constellations;
  • sunny dawn;
  • space theme;
  • geographic Maps.

Use in different types of premises

The functional features of the premises are one of the main factors determining the nature of the decoration of the ceiling structure in them. Take a look at the photo above: the placement of two-level stretch ceilings in one case can advantageously emphasize the scale of the room and the specifics of its use, but in the other, it can break the harmony in the air and create an uncomfortable, poorly optimized interior. In addition, in bathrooms, balconies, nurseries, you need to be very careful using a multi-level structure - due to direct mechanical action, the stretched fabric can tear, and permanent temperature changes affect its performance.

Nevertheless, people love two-tier stretch ceilings and actively use them in their "homes". Let's look at how this happens and what rules should be followed so that the final result after installation is pleasing to the eye. Well, when is it worth abandoning the rules in order to get an original and effective interior.

In the living room

If you are a resident in a private house and if you want to emphasize the luxury of your living room, we recommend that you view the following photos of stretch bunk ceilings: among them there are many options with deep relief and unexpected contrasts.

It is not enough to have a large living room - you also need to be able to use free square meters to the maximum. With the help of a complex ceiling structure and properly designed lighting, you can favorably highlight the recreation area or place other accents in the interior.

It always looks great when the ceiling is symmetrical to the floor decoration of the room. For example, as in the images below.

As a rule, in urban conditions, with the help of two-level stretch ceilings, the owners tend to emphasize the internal volume of the room. A higher scale is achieved by introducing an additional level in one of the corners of the room. Hidden lighting system- another tool that in skillful hands turns into a well-aimed designer weapon.

Look at how it hits not in the eyebrow, but in the eye.

In the kitchen

Not always modern kitchens allow you to use several levels of decoration on the ceiling at once, but if such an opportunity is present, why not take advantage of it?

In city apartments:

  • narrow frame;
  • spot lighting over the entire area of the lower tier;
  • light-colored stretch fabric placed in the center;
  • central chandelier (if possible)

Such a schematic arrangement of accents makes it possible to achieve excellent visualization of the interior even in modest kitchen-type rooms. All the laws of competent zoning are observed, the working area is favorably illuminated by symmetrically spaced spots, and a chandelier is used as the main source of lighting. Instead, if desired, you can use a ceiling-type lamp - three lamps hanging over the dining table will be enough to organize a comfortable meal and a great atmosphere.

Be careful with experiments in modest-sized kitchens: non-observance of color balance can cause an uncomfortable interior that puts pressure on the brain. In particular, be extremely careful with the use of black. If it is already difficult to overcome your sympathy for him, then give him a place on the simulated frame, and give the main level a pure white color. The combination of two contrasting textures is especially advantageous - glossy and matte. In this case, it is best to place the first on the frame, and the second in the central part.

In private houses, it makes little sense to adhere to any specific schemes, since each house has its own layout, and most of the schemes known and recommended by experts simply do not work. It is best to resort to the help of a professional designer - he will be able to take into account all the nuances of the room and develop a unique project. Of course, the ceiling surface should be given maximum attention.

We offer you a photo with the successful use of stretch two-level ceilings in the format of a spacious kitchen in a private house.

In the bedroom

Leave all the provocations with color and texture for other rooms - in the bedroom you need to create an extremely cozy atmosphere that is most conducive to relaxation. To do this, use calm ceilings for two-level ceilings. pastel shades, avoid geometric congestion and jagged lines.

Soft, absolutely unobtrusive lighting and delicate accents on the bedside area of the two-level ceiling are welcome.

If your bedroom uses a central chandelier, then prefer not the most massive design: the light source should be natural and not impudently suggest itself in the field of view.

A separate case - imitation of the ceiling under starry sky using LED lamps. With the help of different types of glow, you can achieve a unique color scheme of a two-level ceiling. Of course, someone will say, they say, a hackneyed plot, it's time to come up with something new. But take a look at the photo below, where the stretch bunk ceilings of this type are just presented. Isn't it a winning decision?

In the hallway and corridor

One of the most curious tools to help enrich the rather meager design of modern hallways with the help of

stretch ceilings. As a rule, in apartments these rooms cannot boast of a solid size, so you can apply a little trick: use ceilings of this type in the same way as in the next photo.

Thus, you skillfully kill two birds with one stone:

  • visually enrich a room that is modest in terms of aesthetic characteristics;
  • make it longer with the help of lower tiers parallel to each other.

Sequentially placed lamps on a two-level ceiling enhance the desired effect.

Here are some more interesting photos with two-level ceilings in the format of modern hallways and corridors. Carefully study the interior - great ideas are hidden in it, each of which can potentially fit organically into the design of your room.

In the children's room

Children passionately love everything bright, playful, fabulous. Therefore, in terms of choosing colors and motifs when organizing a stretch ceiling, parents have a completely free hand:

  • Flora and fauna;
  • stars and sun;
  • fairy-tale heroes;
  • motifs from comics and animations.

Do you want a blue sky filled with vital energy on your ceiling? You are welcome!

Cartoon characters left the TV screen and settled on a stretch ceiling? Why not?

Incredibly beautiful butterflies flutter, creating a great mood and a reason to smile? Great option for the ceiling in the nursery!

As you might guess, for the installation of a two-level stretch ceiling, everything that one way or another is in the circle of interests of your child and makes up a map of his inner world is suitable. However, be careful with the lower level: kids often like to frolic with all sorts of objects, so the risk of damaging the stretched canvas is permanent.

Conclusion

You can look at how stretch two-level ceilings look favorably in the photo, you can endlessly, but you won’t be full of images alone - sooner or later you will have to move from theory to practice. The existing variety of color and texture solutions of stretch ceilings allows you to express even the most daring and extraordinary idea on the ceiling surface. The main thing at the same time is to organically fit it into the overall interior. It should be remembered that all parts of a stretch two-tier ceiling are equivalent, which means that deliberately tasteless, intrusive options that are on the verge of an aesthetic foul should be avoided. An effect similar to two-level ceilings can be achieved by using two-tone stretch ceilings in the interior. Or fit them into such design concepts in which they will look natural and beneficial. As the programmers say: "turn a bug into a feature".
